Creative Uses for Diaper Cakes

As orders are placed, I always hear great ideas on how to use diaper cakes besides just great gifts!  Feel free to use any of these ideas or let me know your ideas and we can work out something for you!

How much can you remember?

I had a customer request a diaper cake to put a twist on a traditional game that is played at many wedding and baby showers.  Normally, the game is played where the host has a tray of items and she carries it around for everyone to see.  Then takes the tray out of the room and asks the guests to recall as many items as they can from the tray.  The diaper cake version can be played in one of two ways.  The first, is to carry the diaper cake around as you would the tray.  Then ask the guests what they can remember.  The second is a little harder and maybe a little sneaky on your part.  Diaper cakes are always a great eye catcher and 99% off the time get a good amount of attention.  Knowing this, I had a customer create a cake to play this game.  Only this time, she did not walk around with the cake.  She had it sitting in a place that all guests would have to walk past and look at many times.  Then for her last game, she took away the cake and asked her guests to name as many items that were on the cake as possible.  She later said that this game was a hit and that the guests actually remembered more than she ever thought they would be able to!

The “Prize Cake”

Diaper and towel cakes can have just about anything added to them.  I had a customer request a wash rag cake with $5.00 gift cards inserted  to give away as prizes.  She needed five total prizes so we decided on doing four gift cards and giving away the cake as the last prize.  If you were doing a diaper cake instead, it would probably work better to have a gift card for each winner and let the mother-to-be keep the diaper cake in the end.  Either way, it was a great idea that went over very well.  There is currently a photo of this in the “photo” section.

The “Advice Cake”

For those of you who are a little more sentimental, I think this would be a great idea for you!  I had a request for a wedding shower to create a wash rag cake where the guests could give advice to the bride on the utensils that were included in the cake.  We did not want the guests to write directly on the utensils of course, so I attached a small piece of fancy resume paper to the utensils and the guests could then write on the paper.  Later, when the bride takes the cake apart, she can keep each piece of advice from her guests and break apart the cake and have many utensils and wash rags for her kitchen.  This would also work just the same with a diaper cake.  Rather than have utensils, we could insert spoons, pacifiers, and other small items that the guests can pull out of the cake.  There is currently a photo of this in the “photo” section.

Diaper Cake Lottery

Not every game needs to make your guests rack their brains for answers.  This one is simple.  I had a customer request to have six, one layered diaper cakes to use as centerpieces for her baby shower.  Each used the same ribbon, but we mixed up what other items were used, then they all matched one another and were still usable for this game.  There were four chairs at each table, so each cake had four random baby items.   I then made her a list of each of the items that I used, cut them up, and placed them in a sandwich bag.  At the introduction of this game, she had each person at the table pick an item on the diaper cake that they saw in front of them.  She then drew a piece of paper out of the bag and whoever had that item chosen was the winner of the game!  It was quick, simple, and an easy win for a guest.

Guess How Many

This is normally better for larger diaper or towel cakes, but could be used as a little less challenging game for smaller cakes.  Diaper cakes contain more diapers then what you would think.  It can often trick your guests a little.  I had a customer request to have one made and she needed the exact number of diapers used.  When I asked her why, she said she was going to make her guests try to guess how many diapers were used.  She was a little tricky though, she had me put items in the middle of the cake that you could not see, to throw off the amount of diapers that appeared to be used.

It’s Never Too Early To Start Saving!

I thought that this was a great way to get guests to give a little money to the new baby.  With diaper cakes, most people usually put the baby’s name on the front or something else to welcome home a new baby, but not one of my latest customers.  She requested that I put, “Help Me Start Saving” and putting a small matching gift bag on the top rather than a bow or other topper.  When I asked her later how it went, she said that everyone thought that it was so adorable that they added the change from their purses and even several one and five dollar bills!  She said the mommy walked away with just over $30.00 at the end of the shower and that at one point she even took out the money to start over because the guests gave more than she ever thought!
